Description
Petitioners
Humphrey de Bassingburne (Bassingbourn).
Name(s)
de Bassingburne (Bassingbourn), Humphrey
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Humphrey de Bassingburne states that his ancestor, William de Lysours, held the forestership of all the king's forest in the counties of Northamptonshire, Huntingdonshire and Buckinghamshire, between the bridge at Oxford and the bridge at Earith in Huntingdonshire, by charters of Henry II and Richard I. This bailiwick was taken into the king's hand through a series of minorities, and the charters lost during the barons' war. They were returned to him by religious men six years ago: he asks that they be examined, and that the king order his council to do justice on this matter.[Transcriptions of the charters of Henry II and Richard I follow the petition].
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio. The inquisitions returned in Chancery after the death of William de Lysours are to be examined, and the king is to be informed on the contents of the petition, in order that he might do further what rightly etc.

Note
The writ for CIM 1219-1307 no.1992 is dated 22 November 33 Edward I (1304), and the inquisition is dated 13 January 34 Edward I (1306). It is hard to tell from the brief description if this is the same matter, but it does concern a keepership of the forest, and it apparently includes a writ from Humphrey de Bassingburne.
