Date

Description
Petitioners
Bernard Barraw (Barrow).
Name(s)
Barraw (Barrow)., Bernard
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Scotland
Gascony, [France]
London.
Nature of request
Bernard Barraw states that he is owed £105 3s. 11d, from debts of Edward I and Edward II, and specifically for money he lent to Gascons coming to fight in Scotland for Edward II. He is now reduced to such poverty that he offers the letters he has for these debts to the king for the sum of £50 only.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer, Barons, and Chamberlains of the Exchequer are to be ordered that, when they have seen what evidence he has for the debt, if they find that the debt is still wholly due, then they are to let him have some reward or satisfaction in payment, as they can agree with him, receiving etc. and charging etc.
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1327, from the references to 'le bon roi Edward vostre ael' and to the debts of the king's father. This must date from the reign of Edward III, and the first few years of the reign would be a likely time for a petition asking for payment of the late king's debts.CCR 1330-3 p.89 is an order to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to pay the petitioner for wines bought from him, dated 20 December 1330: but this is clearly a different debt.
