SC 8/31/1544
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Barton
Name(s)
de Barton, Robert
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Robert de Barton states that the king's father appointed him with others as a justice to take assizes in Cumberland and Westmorland for seven years during time of war, and granted him 40 marks for his expenses, sending him his writ of liberate to the Treasurer and Chamberlains to deliver this to him: but they would not do this without a letter of the privy seal, which Robert could never get. He requests that the king and council order the Treasurer and Chamberlains to deliver the money to him, according to the form of the writ of liberate, or to allow it to him in debts he owes the king elsewhere.
Nature of endorsement
A writ of Chancery containing the force of this petition is to be sent to the Treasurer and Barons etc., that, when they have seen the liberate which previously came to them for the 40 marks, if there is no other reason why he has not been paid except that he had no letter of the privy seal, as the petition says, they are to make him due allowance in the debts he owes the king.
Places mentioned
Cumberland
Westmorland
Note
Dated on the guard to '? 1327 seq.' From the subject-matter, it would seem likely to date to the start of a new reign, and from the hand and the French endorsement that this is likely to be that of Edward III.
