John Bartram and Joan his wife state that they were seised of the manor of Wigston in Leicestershire with its appurtenances, of Joan's right, until 20 December, in the ninth year of the king's reign, when Baldwin Bugge and other malefactors forcibly disseised them of it while John was performing his office in Northumberland; and Baldwin has entered into an agreement with all the jurors in the county that they will support him, and not find against him. They ask for a writ to Baldwin, summoning him before the king and his council to be examined on this matter, and that they might be restored to the manor, together with their costs and damages, by the advice of the council.
Nature of endorsement
On 29 (?) November in the tenth year at Westminster, it was granted that a writ is to be sent to the aforementioned Baldwin Bugge to appear before the king's council at Westminster at the quinzaine of Hilary next, to answer on the contents of the petition, and to those accusations which will then be made to him on the king's behalf on this matter, on pain of £100; and another writ is to be sent to the Sheriff of Leicestershire to deliver this writ to the aforesaid Bugge on pain of £40, in the presence of the lords of Gloucester, Canterbury, Ely, Rochester, Bath, Lincoln, Norfolk, Hunt[ingdon] and Scrope.
