Nature of request
The Abbot of Bardney states that, when on the information of the Bishop of Lincoln given to the king's father, Robert, formerly Abbot of Bardney was removed from office, the temporalities of the abbey were seized into the hand of the king's father, and the prior and convent made fine at the Exchequer to have the issues of the temporalities during the vacancy; but that when Robert was reinstated by process in the court of Rome, the king pardoned them this fine by a writ of his privy seal. The present king has ordered the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to allow that writ, by a writ of Chancery in the sixth year of his reign, but Thomas Fitz Eustace, formerly Sheriff of Lincolnshire, had already levied £40 of that fine. The abbot requests an allowance for this in the debts which he owes at the Exchequer.
