Description
Petitioners
Cecily Balle (Ball), widow of John Balle
Name(s)
Balle (Ball), Cecily
Addressees
King
Nature of request
Cecily, widow of John Balle, states that Edward Broke, Lord Cobham, gave her late husband an obligation for £20 to be received from John Symmyng of Saffron Walden, in payment of a debt of £20 incurred at the time of the queen's coronation, and her husband made acquittance to him of the debt. But the obligation has proved to be neither due nor lawful, and Lord Cobham has refused to pay the debt. She has no remedy at common law, and asks the king to command Lord Cobham to pay.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Waldon (Saffron Walden), [Essex]
People mentioned
John Balle (Ball), late husband of petitioner
Edward Broke (Brook), Lord Cobham
[Margaret of Anjou], Queen of England
John Symmyng of Saffron Walden.
Note
Dated on the guard to 'c. 1445 sq. ref. of coronation of Q (Margaret)'. Margaret of Anjou was crowned on 20 May 1445, and this petition must date from between then and the end of Henry VI's reign: probably from some years after 1445, as the man to whom the money was owed has died.
