Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/31/1529
Date
[1301-c. 1305]
Description
Petitioners
Alexander de Bailliol (Balliol)
Name(s)
de Bailliol (Balliol), Alexander
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Alexander de Bailliol states that he and his ancestors have always had the wardship and marriage of Hugham, which he has claimed after the death of Robert Hugham, tenant of this tenement, and has shown his claim before the king's council, but this business has been put in respite from parliament to parliament because Alexander has been on the king's service in his Scottish war. He still is, with the Guardian of Scotland, and so asks the king to put this matter in respite again, until he has leisure to pursue his right.
Nature of endorsement
He is to explain his petition. The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered by writ that, when they have examined the book of fees and other memoranda of the Exchequer, in the presence of the justices and calling the Escheator before them, they are to do what is justly to be done for the king's right in this matter etc. And in the meantime the aforesaid Alexander is to hold as before. And the aforesaid Alexander is to be at the Exchequer on the morrow of the Ascension to receive etc.
Places mentioned
Hugham (Higham), [Kent]
Scotland
People mentioned
Robert Hugham (Higham)
Note
The inquisition in CIPM, vol.IV, no.36 was held under a writ of 18 April 1301: this petition must date from after that date. A summary of the related petition SC 8/1/33 is enrolled on the roll of the parliament of February 1305 (Memoranda de Parliamento pp.110-11 (no.182), Rot. Parl. vol. I p.166a): this would appear to be the final determination of the matter, so it is likely that SC 8/31/1529 is earlier, but it is possible that the Scottish war again intervened, and that this is a later petition.
