Nature of request
Hugh de Audele and Margaret his wife state that they entered the manor of Thaxted in Essex as of the right and inheritance of Margaret, and have long been peacefully seised of it, Margaret, widow of Bartholomew [de Badlesmere], is suing a writ to expel them from this manor, claiming a right in it although she has none. They request that no writ be issued in Chancery to expel them from their possession without original writ and due process according to the law.

CCR 1327-30 pp.183-184 (the order to the Sheriff of Essex to supersede his orders to deliver the manor to Margaret de Badlesmere, because of the claims of the petitioners) is dated at Nottingham, 8 November 1327.CCR 1327-30 p.250 (the order to the Sheriff not to do anything to the prejudice of the petitioners) is dated at York, 4 February 1328. Either of these could be in response to this petition.CCR 1327-30, pp. 297-298 (instructions to the Sheriff of Essex to deliver the manor and other lands to Margaret de Badlesmere, as it was assigned to Hugh and Margaret de Audele only after the deaths of both Bartholomew and Margaret), dated at Evesham, 1 July 1328, represents a later stage in proceedings, but mentions that the case had been heard in Chancery after the Northampton parliament of April 1328.Note that both sides are claiming to be of the party of Thomas Earl of Lancaster, and seem to be reclaiming lands seized because of their support for him.
