Description
Petitioners
Dean and chapter of church of St Patrick, Armagh
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The Dean and chapter of church of St Patrick, Armagh, state that ever since St Patrick came to Ireland they have always had the temporalities of Armagh and Tullahoge during vacancies, but that the Treasurer is now asking them to account for these without any commission from the king, contrary to their franchise and the law of the church. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.A writ is to be sent to the Treasurer and Barons of the Dublin Exchequer that they are to search the remembrances of the Exchequer, and if they find by search or inquest that the Dean and chapter have always received the issues of the said places during vacancies, and that the king and his progenitors have never been answered for these issues during vacancies until now, then they are to cease demanding the issues from them and to let them hold them in peace.
Places mentioned
Ardnaugh (Armagh), [County Armagh, Ireland]
Tyllaghog (Tullahoge), [County Tyrone, Ireland]
Dyvelin (Dublin), [County Dublin, Ireland]

Note
Dated to c. 1334 by 'Irish Ancient Petitions', pp.10-11; a note on the guard comes to the same conclusion on the grounds that the see was vacant then, and the hand similar to SC 8/31/1510, which is dated 1338.CPR 1330-4 p.519 is dated at York, 26 February 1334: according to the Handbook of British Chronology, Archbishop Stephen Segrave died in October 1333. It also states that a new archbishop (David O Hiraghty) was consecrated in July 1334, and received the temporalities of his archbishopric in March 1335.CCR 1333-7 p.291 is dated at Roxburgh, 15 January 1335. It would be reasonable to assume, from the hand, that this was the vacancy mentioned by this petition.
