SC 8/31/1503
Date
[1323-1327]
Description
Petitioners
John de Argenteym.
Name(s)
de Argenteym, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John de Argenteym states that he has lost the manor of Oldbury in the village of Boxgrove to John de Coleworth, who brought an assize of novel disseisin against him before John de Bosser, justice, appointed to hold assizes in the county of Sussex in the sixteenth year of the king's reign, because John de Bosser, bribed by John de Coleworth, would not allow his challenges or exceptions, and procured the jury of the assize. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
If he feels himself to be wronged in any way which concerns the judgment, or if there is an error, he is to have the record brought before the king.
Places mentioned
Crawley, [Sussex]
Eldeburi (Oldbury), [Sussex]
Boxgrove, [Sussex].
People mentioned
John de Bosser (Bousser), justice
John de Coleworth, clerk.
Note
The petition mentions the assize in Sussex as having taken place in the sixteenth year of the king's reign: the hand and the French endorsement make this overwhelmingly likely to be 16 Edward II (8 July 1322 - 7 July 1323), rather than 16 Edward I as a note on the guard suggests. Confirmation of this is found in CCR 1318-23 p.584, where an unrelated item dated at Durham, 30 July 1322, mentions John de Bousser as a justice currently taking assizes in Sussex, and from SC 8/7/341, a petition of c. 1321-1322 from John de Coleworth, complaining about being disseised of a tenement in Boxgrove by John Dargentime. He is told to sue at common law, which might have led to the assize mentioned here. In any case, this petition must date from between the end of 16 Edward II and the end of his reign.
