Description
Petitioners
Stephen Aleyn (Alan) of London.
Name(s)
Aleyn (Alan), Stephen
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Stephen Aleyn states that he was given the office called 'Bodere' in Dover castle until restitution was made to him of a sum of money stolen from him at sea, but that he was expelled from this without being given another office and without restitution being made to him. When he petitioned that the king might either renew his commission of the office, or grant full execution of the arrest begun against the Count of Hainault's men, parliament agreed, and the king promised to give him an office, but has not done so. He therefore requests an office or execution of his arrest, as he has suffered delays and damages for seventeen years and more.
Nature of endorsement
The council is not yet minded to grant arrest.
Places mentioned
London
Henau (Hainault), [Belgium]
Dover, [Kent]
Westminster.
People mentioned
[William], Count of Hainault.
Note
CCR 1318-23 p.398 (Edward II's order to arrest the goods of the men of Hainault) is dated at Westminster, 25 August 1321; CCR 1327-30 pp.393-394, a request for justice from Edward III to the Count of Hainault is dated at Northampton, 20 May 1328, and CCR 1330-3 p.138, another such request is dated at Winchester, 20 March 1330. The grant to Stephen of the office of 'Bodere' is made at Croydon, 1 March 1331 (CPR 1330-4 p.77), and the order revoking this grant, CPR 1330-4 p.88, is dated at Westminster, 20 March 1331. It is possible that CPR 1330-4 p.555, the grant of the tronage of wools in Boston, which is dated at Newcastle upon Tyne, 18 June 1334, was made in response to this petition.
