Reference
SC 8/30/1486
Date
[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
Isabel de Aldewyncle (Aldwincle), widow of Richard de Aldwincle.
Name(s)
de Aldewyncle (Aldwincle), Isabel
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Isabel, widow of Richard de Aldewyncle, states that she leased the manor of Aldwincle to John de Bentek for a term of six years, on condition that she could enter and hold it for any default of payment on John's part, but that, although John owes her money, she was not able to enter, because of Thomas, earl of Lancaster's support of him. She requests a writ to the Sheriff of Northamptonshire to deliver to her the seisin of the manor, which is in the king's hand because of John's forfeiture for adherence to the Earl of Lancaster.
Nature of endorsement
Certain faithful people are to be assigned to inquire into the contents of the petition, and how those tenements were demised; and when the inquisition has been returned in Chancery, and the charters and muniments mentioned in the petition have been examined there, justice is then to be done to her there.
Places mentioned
Aldwincle, [Northamptonshire]
Tutbury, [Staffordshire]
Rothwell, [Northamptonshire].
People mentioned
Richard de Aldewyncle (Aldwincle)
John de Bentek
Thomas [of Lancaster], Earl of Lancaster.
Note
The petition is dated on the guard to 'c. 1327', with reference to the fall of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, and the fact that the petitioner makes her request for the sake of the king's father's soul. The latter reference, however, may equally be to Edward I rather than Edward II, and it seems more likely that the petition dates from the immediate aftermath of the fall of Thomas of Lancaster in 1322.
