Date
[1320-1327]
Description
Petitioners
The burgesses and commonalty of St Albans
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The burgesses and commonalty of St Albans state that the Abbot of St Albans and some of his monks have demanded from them certain indentures concerning an arbitration made in certain disputes between the abbey and the burgesses, and the king's charter of confirmation of these indentures, and are charging them with certain services contrary to their state of free burgage, which they have by these documents: but they have refused to do as he wishes. The abbot, who is powerful enough to control the sheriff, coroner and justices, has moved against them, and has maliciously indicted them of various crimes and threatened them, in order to have the indentures and charter annulled, causing them to flee the town. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Sir Roger de Grey, justice, etc. is to be ordered to have brought into Chancery the record and process held before them concerning the Abbot and convent of St Albans and the people of the same town and this business.

Note
John Hothom is described in the petition as 'adonqes chanceller nostre seignur le roi': he was chancellor between 1318 and 1320. This petition must date from between then and the end of Edward II's reign - in view of the French endorsement, it is probably later rather than earlier.
