Date
[1303-1307]
Description
Petitioners
John de Marines, Abbot of St Albans
Name(s)
de Marines, John
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
St Albans, [Hertfordshire].
Nature of request
The Abbot of St Albans asks to make fine of the estate his ancestors had in the abbey during vacancies, in order to avoid the wrongs done during the last vacancy. Endorsement: The king wills that it be held in the same estate as it was of old during vacancies and has ordered the Treasurer and Barons that the rolls and memoranda of the Exchequer are to be searched to see what estate he had of old during vacancies, and nothing new is to be done. And a writ is to be issued on this.

Note
CPR 1292-1301 p.617 is dated at Linlithgow, 15 November 1301, CPR 1301-7 p.11 is dated at Linlithgow, 30 January 1302. CPR 1301-7 p.53 is dated at Westminster, 12 August 1302, and speaks of restoring to the Abbot and Convent such of their temporalities as are in the king's hands, such as fees and escheats, mentioning his letters patent to them made before the vacancy. These are found in CPR 1292-1301 p.604, dated at Coldstream, 20 July 1301, and in CCR 1296-1302 p.470, dated at Dunipace, 14 October 1301. These would seem to be the basis of the dispute, and the new Abbot, as the former Prior, would know all about them. However, this petition seems to date from some time later: it mentions an enquiry being ordered in the Exchequer in the king's thirty-first year (20 November 1302 - 19 November 1303) - at the request, it would seem, of the new abbot after the last vacancy; and there has been a delay since then. The best date for this petition seems to be 1303-1307.
