Date
[c. 1340]
Description
Petitioners
The prioress of Aconbury
Addressees
King
Occupation
The prioress of Aconbury
Nature of request
The prioress of Aconbury states that she has no spirituality or temporality attached to a spirituality, but has always been taxed among the laity, as has been found by an inquisition in the eleventh year of the king's reign, and can be seen by the rolls of Chancery of the Dean and chapter of Hereford, collectors of clerical taxes - or of any other collectors. She requests that she might be allowed to aver this, by the collectors, and by the judgment of the court.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Aconbury, [Herefordshire]
People mentioned
The Dean and chapter of Hereford
Note
Dated on the guard to? c. 1283; but the hand is not thirteenth-century, and it is unlikely that the petition dates from before the Taxation of Pope Nicholas in 1291. On the basis of the hand, it seems more likely that the internal reference is to the eleventh year of Edward III, and a date of c. 1340 is therefore proposed here.
