Addressees
Commons of parliament
Nature of request
The artificers and craftsmen and women of London and other cities, towns, boroughs and villages of England and Wales complain that ready-made goods are being imported from abroad, and also being made by alien craftsmen living in England and Wales, putting them out of work. They request that the commons ask the King to ordain by authority of parliament, that no merchants should bring any of these ready-made goods, which are itemised in the petition, into the realm after the feast of St Michael next, upon pain of their forfeiture, half to the King and half to the person who seizes them - with an exception for goods taken at sea, without fraud or deception, or shipwrecked. They also ask that the masters or wardens of all crafts, and the mayors, bailiffs or other officials of all cities, boroughs, towns or villages, should have power to institute searches for such goods, including within liberties and franchises, and to seize them; and that this act and ordinance might be in force for ten years after next Michaelmas.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be sent to the Lords (on face). The king agrees to this petition, with the following provisos:1) Goods made in Ireland or Wales may be brought into England, as they used to be.2) The masters, wardens or others making searches are not to enter any franchise or exempt place without an officer of the said place.3) This act and ordinance is not to prejudice Robert Styllyngton, Dean of the King's free chapel of St Martin le Grand, or his successors, or any person or persons dwelling within the sanctuary or precinct of the chapel, and especially within the lane called St Martin's Lane.4) This act and ordinance is not to prejudice the merchants of Almaine. And this act shall remain in force for as long as it pleases the King.
