Description
Petitioners
William Elton, esquire.
Name(s)
Elton, William
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
William Elton requests that the act of resumption made in the present parliament might not be prejudicial to him, with regard to grants from the king of 6 d. a day to be taken from the issues and profits of Norfolk and Suffolk, and of £12 annually from the fee farm of the town of Malmesbury.
Nature of endorsement
Be it remembered that in consideration that the king of his grace has made William Elton a gentleman, and that he, at the desire and command of the king put his life in great danger in going to Harfleur when it was last besieged by the king's enemies, and that he brought letters to the king out of the same town, the lords have agreed that the same William shall be provided with the £12 as contained in this bill: and as for the 6d. a day, it is to be resumed into the king's hand.
Places mentioned
Norfolk
Suffolk
Malmesbury, [Wiltshire]
Harfleur, [Normandy, France].
People mentioned
Abbot and convent of Malmesbury.
Note
The act of resumption to which the petitioner requests an exception is enrolled on the roll of the parliament held at Westminster in July 1455 (33 Henry VI) (Rot. Parl. vol. V, p.318b). The grant made to Alice, Duchess of Suffolk, edited in Rot. Parl. vol. V, p.394a-b was made during a parliament, and appears to be from that of March 1453 (31 Henry VI), as it stipulates that part of the grant will take effect from Easter of that year.CPR 1452-61 p.71 is dated at Westminster, 17 May 1453, and states that the grant is in lieu of the reversion of this sum previously granted to him (CPR 1446-52 p.77, dated at Westminster, 10 July 1447), annulled in an act of resumption in the parliament of November 29 Henry VI (1450).CPR 1446-52 p.557 and CPR 1446-52 p.548 are both dated at Westminster, 16 March 1452. They give different reasons why the previous grant is now invalid however: p.557 saying that it is because the William Elton is now an esquire, not a yeoman, and p.548 citing an act of resumption.CPR 1436-41 p.442 is dated at Windsor Castle, 8 August 1440.
