Reference
SC 8/28/1386
Date
[1453-1454]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Bury St Edmunds
Addressees
King and council
Occupation
Abbot of Bury St Edmunds
Nature of request
The abbot requests writs or letters of the Privy Seal to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer ordering them to surcease the levying of £40 from him for not attending this current parliament. He states that at the time the parliament was summoned he was only abbot elect and did not receive a summons.
Nature of endorsement
Memorandum that on the 15 April 1454 the king by the advice of the lords spiritual and temporal in parliament considering the petition granted the bill just as it is petitioned, and a writ of execution should be had.
Places mentioned
Bury St Edmunds, [Suffolk]
Note
The petition is dated to 1453-1454 because it dates to the parliament of March 1453 which was in session until April 1454 (it being prorogued on several occasions in that period), the response including a date recording that it was answered 14 April 1454, perhaps indicating that it was presented late in the period that the parliament was held (PROME, parliament March 1453, appendix no.4). The edition of the petition found in Rot. Parl. V, p.335a-b, (no. 13) is wrongly ascribed to 33 Hen. VI (1 Sept 1454-31 Aug. 1455) (Rot. Parl. V, p.328).
