Nature of request
The petitioners state that they are impleaded in many courts of wapentakes and other courts baron in Yorkshire, Cumberland and the city of York by evil and malicious people. However they are not allowed to appoint attorneys despite this being expressly allowed to abbots and priors by the authority of parliament, and the bailiffs, stewards and officers of the courts by conspiracy have summoned the abbot on the same day to courts sufficiently far apart that he cannot attend all of them. When the abbot has tried to attend he has often been threatened on route. Consequently he has been fined for the use of attorneys, and for default, and these fines have been great. They request remedy, and that they be allowed to use attorneys. If the bailiffs, stewards and officers will not allow the law to be done then they forfeit each £20.
