Nature of request
Bodrugan states that, a petition was brought by John Arundell, John Penpouse, William Carnesuyowe and Otys Phillip, asking that he be summoned to appear before the King's Bench to answer various charges. Such an order was issued on 24 June 1474, but Bodrugan was in Cornwall and unable to reach London within the fifteen days demanded. Also, since he was unable to raise the 5000 marks surety demanded, and was fearful of being sent to prison, where he could have remained at the will of his accusers for the rest of his life, he did not appear and defaulted, and was therefore convicted in his absence. A similar summons, brought on the petition of James Trefusis, was also issued from Chancery on 22 June 1474, to which Bodrugan also defaulted for the same reasons. Bodrugan protests his innocence of all the charges, which he claims were brought through malice. He also states that his wife, Margaret, Viscountess Lisle, had lost her dower lands, and all lands held by him in her right and in jointure. He asks that all writs, convictions and judgments be annulled and his estates restored.
