Description
Petitioners
William atte Loue and other tenants of the king of his castle and honor of Tutbury, dwelling in Scropton.
Name(s)
atte Loue, William
Addressees
Commons in parliament
Nature of request
The petitioners state that John Forman was lawfully arrested by Blount at Barton Blount within the franchise of Tutbury, and handed over to them to be brought to the castle of Tutbury; as they were doing so, on the Sunday after last Christmas at Sudbury within that franchise, Venables and others unknown with force and arms rescued Forman and assaulted and wounded Loue and the other tenants. Later Venables and others (some named) went into the woods like Robin Hood and his men, and were so menacing that the tenants at Scropton dare not remain or work there and officers could not hold courts without great strength; they have since gone into Cheshire, so that they cannot be justified by the law, and act as outlaws. The petitioners ask for a writ of proclamation to be issued by the chancery to the sheriff of Derbyshire, summoning Venables and the others to appear before the king and his justices to answer for all matters to be put forward in a bill there; and that the judges proceed in accordance with common law whether they appear or not.
