Description
Petitioners
Dean and chapter of cathedral church of St Paul in city of London
Addressees
King
Nature of request
The dean and chapter say that under the will of Pulteney, enrolled in the hustings of London on Monday before St Luke, 23 Edw. III (12 October 1349), he bequeathed £9 3s 4d for his obit to be celebrated annually in the cathedral, and also laid down that there should be three chantries there with priests celebrating daily for his soul, one priest being presented by the master of the college of the chapel of Corpus Christi by the church of St Laurence, another by the mayor of the city, and the third by the dean and chapter, each chaplain receiving 7 marks annually from the master of the college, to which Pulteney bequeathed his tenements and rents in the city and suburbs, with penalties for non-payment. But the master of the college has not paid the sums due to the chantry chaplains for the past two years. The king is asked to grant that the £9 3s 4d for the obit and the 7 marks of rent for the chaplains should be paid by the master and his successors in accordance with Pulteney's will, and that the dean and chapter and the mayor of London may enter and distrain the tenements of Pulteney for rent and penalties until they have been satisfied for the arrears.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be as it is petitioned, provided that by virtue of this concession no person is precluded from right and title belonging to them in any of the tenements specified in this petition.
