Nature of request
The petitioners state that Stamford was found guilty by a jury from Bristol before the king at Westminster of certain trespasses, falsehoods and deceits done to Thomas Norton, whereupon it was awarded that Norton should recover 400 marks in damages, while Stamford was committed to the Marshal, to remain in prison until he had satisfied Norton for damages and the king for redemption. Stamford sued on the grounds that the jurors had made a false oath, but a jury of 24 men of Bristol found against him, so he was to remain in prison until he had made a great fine with the king. Stamford then brought false actions against various of the petitioners in London and Surrey, as a result of which Stamford was removed from the prison of King's Bench to the Fleet prison. The petitioners ask that Stamford be kept in the Fleet until he pays the fines to the king and satisfies Norton's executors for the 400 marks.
