Date
[1433]
Description
Petitioners
William Warwyke (Warwick) of Salisbury, merchant.
Name(s)
Warwyke (Warwick), William
Addressees
Commons in parliament.
Occupation
merchant
Nature of request
Warwick shows that he sent Trenchevyle, his servant, factor and attorney, to Brittany to trade in woollen cloth which had cost £200, but in October [1430], having exchanged the cloth for other goods at Gildo, Trenchevyle was imprisoned and tortured in the castle of Gildo by the lord of Montafiliant against the truce between the king and the duke of Brittany and in breach of his letters of safe conduct. Trenchevile had to pay £50 for his release, and £28 3s 4d was paid at St Malo in part-payment, but the lord of Montafiliant had him thrown over the castle wall and drowned, whereupon he kept all the merchandise; damages to Warwick of £400. Warwick asks for leave to seize goods and merchandise of the lord of Montafiliant, his tenants and servants in England, Jersey or Guernsey to the value of £300.
Nature of endorsement
Letters under privy seal are to be sent to duke of Brittany and lord of Montafiliant requesting remedy to be made to Warwick on these matters; if due redress is not made, the Chancellor is to issue commission under the great seal for the arrest of the goods and merchandise of the lord of Montafiliant, his tenants and servants, in England, Jersey or Guernsey.

People mentioned

[Henry VI], King of England
Duke of Brittany.
Note
This petition is dated by the title in Rot. Parl. IV, p.458 to 11 Henry VI, making it 1432-3, although it refers to an incident dated October 1430; the letters of marque allowing the arrest of the goods of the lord of Montafiliant are dated 20 May 1435, but was issued only after the duke of Brittany had failed to give redress. On balance a date of 1433 for the petition seems reasonable.
