Nature of request
The petitioners state that Edward I granted to them by his letters patent that the town be a free borough with all the things pertaining to a free borough, and that the men of the town be free burgesses, with right to dispose of their lands and tenements in the town by their last will; after this Edward III granted to them by his letters patent that they be able to elect a mayor and four bailiffs, and that they be able to plead and take writs of fresh force of any tenant in the town and make execution of the assizes in the borough. The petitioners ask the commons to request that the king grant that all the devises of land made after the date of Edward I's letters patent to whatsoever persons to whom they were made which are not annulled by recovery at law, be good and effectual in the law; and that they be able to devise lands and tenements within the town to whomever they like except in mortmain, and that they be good and effectual in the law; and also that the mayor and bailiffs be able to hold before them in the court of the king all manner of assizes of fresh force of whatsoever lands and tenements within the town.
