The wardens of the bridge between Rochester and Strood made before this time by grants, costs and the labour of diverse people by alms, and profits and ease of the king and commonalty of the realm state that the west breast of the bridge is about to perish because of the lack of repair and maintenance of the banks of the lands of the abbess and the master and other persons with land adjoining the west breast to the great damage of the king and the commonalty without hasty remedy. They request that the king ordain that the chancellor have full authority to summon before him in Chancery both the abbess and the master of the hospital and their successors in person or by an attorney having sufficient warrant and authority, and the wardens of the bridge, and all others whom by his discretion seem necessary to examine concerning this matter, and hear and determine it according to his discretion, and at his discretion ordain a remedy for the salvation of the bridge, and put the remedy in execution.

Note
The petition is dated by the title in Rot. Parl. IV, p.458 to 11 Henry VI, making this 1432-3. The grant of pontage on 10 February 1431, seems to be an earlier grant perhaps for the building of the new bridge, rather than a grant made in response to this petition (CPR 1429-36, p.106).
