The commons state that Carpenter on 7 February 1430 suggested to Isabel his wife, who was 16 years of age and had only been married to him for 15 days, that they go on a pilgrimage, and murdered her between Birdham and Stoughton wishing to see if she was pregnant. He was indicted before the justices, outlawed and eventually arrested and put in the prison of King's Bench. The commons request that Carpenter be judged as a traitor, and that the judges have authority to give judgement that he be drawn and hung as a traitor as a warning against such crimes in the future.
