Description
Petitioners
John Beaufort, Earl of Somerset.
Name(s)
Beaufort, Earl of Somerset, John
Addressees
King
Nature of request
The earl states that he is a prisoner in France, and that Henry IV on 8 November 1400 granted by his letters patent to the earl's father manors and lordships in North and South Wales amongst others which had forfeited to the king by the treason of Owain Glyn Dwr. Now John Scudamore and Alice his wife pretending Alice to be the daughter and heir of Glyn Dwr have sued writs against the earl for the manors and lorships, and to his disinheritance against law and right if he does not have the king's aid. He requests that the king consider the premises and ordain that all actions brought against the earl by Scudamore and his wife for the manors and lordships, except the writ pending in the Common Bench are able to be held void; also that neither Scudamore and his wife, nor the heirs of Owen Glyn Dwr have in times to come such actions with or without writs of any of the parcels, except by petition to the king or by writ returnable before the justices of the Common Bench, and any such judgement made in this manner be held void. The earl requests that he and his heirs may have writs from time to time to the justices that they not hold such pleas for such actions moved of the manors, lands and tenements against the tenor of the ordinance except justices by force of petition or of the Common Bench.
Nature of endorsement
The king wishes it.
