Reference
SC 8/26/1266
Date
[c. 1432]
Description
Petitioners
William Brampton of Chesterfield, Derbyshire, merchant
Name(s)
Brampton, William
Addressees
Commons in parliament
Occupation
merchant
Nature of request
William Brampton states that his brother Robert has pretended to be William's factor and attorney, binding himself and William to diverse persons in England and abroad for great sums for merchandise and other things bought from them by Robert, though he was never his factor or attorney, and the obligations were not made with his agreement, and he has never had the merchandise to his use or profit. Because of this he cannot take any merchandise abroad for fear of it being arrested or suffer other grievance from those people with sureties to his great ruin without the king's aid. He requests that the commons request from the king that the obligations and sureties made by his brother to any person without his agreement be annulled against him, and that he should not be charged or injured by them.
Nature of endorsement
It is agreed and ordained that the petitioner by the occasion of any obligations or other securities made by Robert Brampton, his brother to any person without his agreement and assent against the common law of England be annulled, and William Brampton ought not to be charged or injured in any way whatsoever.
Places mentioned
Chesterfield, Derbyshire
People mentioned
Robert Brampton, brother of the petitioner
Note
The petition dates to c. 1432. The title in Rot. Parl. Vol. IV, p.414 states this petition to be for 10 Henry VI (1431-2), and the problems concerning the Bramptons all seem to date to 1431-3, so this date seems acceptable.
