Nature of request
The duke states that he is heir to Edward late duke of York and to Edmund, earl of March. He has encountered considerable problems in proving his age and obtaining his estates because of many inquisitions were not sufficiently taken or returned, so that he is still not able to sue and have livery of his lands and tenements without the king's special grace. He requests that as his lands are so wasted because they have been in the king's hands for so long, and also for his long service to the king that he ordain that the Chancellor of England be authorised to make livery to the duke of his estates, having full force of a lawful livery sued out of Chancery by course of the common law; and also that any farmers of the lands be discharged and the grants made to them by letters patent cancelled, and those with assignments beyond what was due sue for other assignments elsewhere; saving to those not holding by royal letters patents their rights, the duke and his heirs not being precluded from claiming that the lands and tenements descended to them in fee tail.
