Nature of request
The mayor and commonalty request that the current and future mayors be able to compel and constrain everyone of whatever estate or condition seised of any messuages or tenements abutting on the highways or roads of the town to repave and make necessary repairs to the roads adjacent to their property, and to hold inquisitions into defective repairs, warning those, and distraining those who ignore the warnings.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be as it is desired for the high ways and roads of the vill namely the road from the north gate of the town to St Thomas' Bridge in the south, and for the road from the west gate to the gate in the east, and also for the roads called Berewardstrete, Seynt Gylestrete (St Giles' Street), Swynwelstrete, Kyngeswellestrete, Seyntmaristrete (St Mary Street), Seyntmartynstrete and the way called Marketplace, provided that everyone with a messuage or tenement abutting the marketplace is not compelled by the ordinance to repair the pavement before his messuage beyond 30 feet in length of the front of his messuage, the remainder being repaired at the common cost of all the vill.

Dated to 1431 by the heading in Rot. Parl. IV, p.367 where it is noted that the petition comes from the parliament held at Westminster on Fiday next before the feast of St Hillary, 9 Hen. VI (January 1431). This date is confirmed by an exemplification of the petition and its response made on 18 March 1431 (CPR 1429-36::p.117).
