Nature of request
The prior and convent state that Fleet gave to them in the 8th year of the reign of Edward I 20s. of a quit rent from a tenement in the parish of St Martin, Ludgate, London to provide a taper before the shrine of St Thomas the martyr. In the last 3 years this has been withheld by the tenants as they perceived that the bequest was made to no certain person and it was outside a writ of right. The prior and convent request that with the authority of parliament he ordain that the prior and his successors should have and enjoy the rent forever to sustain the taper, and that the prior be able to distrain for the rent, and that the possession of the rent by the prior and his predecessors be sufficient title to have and demand the rent.
