Description
Petitioners
Richard Reedbarowe, hermit of the chapel of Our Lady and St Anne at Spurn Head.
Name(s)
Reedbarowe, Richard
Addressees
Commons in parliament.
Occupation
hermit of the chapel of Our Lady and St Anne at Spurn Head
Nature of request
Reedbarowe states that there are many dangers for shipping on entering the Humber, and many ships, men and cargoes are lost, and out of compassion he has begun a tower to be a beacon day and night for vessels coming into the Humber. At the parliament at Leicester the commons requested a grant of a levy on boats coming into the Humber according to their tonnage for the period of 10 years. Reedbarowe requests letter patent for such a levy to be collected by certain merchants and mariners of Hull, the money to be spent on the tower by their oversight.
Nature of endorsement
Let letters patent under the great seal be made to the mayor of Hull that he and those deputies that he may wish to appoint for ten years next following in aid of the construction of the tower begun at Spurn Head be able to take from each boat coming out from the sea into the River Humber sums according to their portage. Saving to the king and all other lieges of the king their liberties granted to them beforehand. Providing that at all times the money raised is loyally applied to the construction of the tower by the advice of Tutbury, Marshall, Fitlyng, Holme and Robinson or others assigned by the Chancellor. The mayor is to render an account annually of the money for him and his deputies.
