Description
Petitioners
Merchants of diverse parts of England.
Addressees
Commons in parliament.
Nature of request
The merchants state that from time out of mind lambs' wool, shorling and scalding have been accustomed to pass under poundage paid to the customers of the king when poundage has been granted, for which poundage the customers answered at the Exchequer, and were acquitted of the same. Now many customers have been surcharged in their accounts for the great custom of wools and subsidies notwithstanding the poundage paid to the customers, and the customers are seeking to recover the sums from the merchants to their ruin. They request that the king consider the situation as the great custom and the subsidy exceeds the value of the merchandise if it is charged in the form of wool or wool-fell, and that such merchandise should not be included under the great custom or subsidy, and the customers be quit of such sums both beforehand and in the future.
Nature of endorsement
The king is to be advised.
Note
Dated to 1429 by the heading in Rot. Parl. IV, p.335 where it is noted that the petition comes from the parliament held at Westminster in the morrow of the feast of St Matthew the Apostle, 8 Hen. VI (September 1429).
