Description

Nature of request
The burgesses state that Henry V granted to them by his letters patent because of the damage to their town, and the scarcity of people that they could buy wool, skins and wool fells from whomever they like between Coquet and Tweed, and between Teviotdale, shipping them overseas paying for them at a reduced rate. The present king has for the six years following granted that they could only ship the wool to Middelburg and Bruges. However the burgesses can no longer buy wool from Scotland because of the king of Scotland's prohibition. The burgesses request that for the repair of the town and the increase of customs there that they be able to buy wool, skins and wool fells between Blyth and Tweed, Blyth being nine miles from the Coquet, since they cannot buy wool from Scotland, ship the wool where they like, and have no other merchandise in which they can invest.
