Description

Nature of request
The merchants state that certain liberties were granted to them by charters of the king's progenitors, that one alderman of the city of London ought to be assigned to them as a judge before whom they can plead and rapidly recover their debts. However for the preceding seven years they have not had an alderman assigned because the mayor and alderman did not wish it. Although at the last parliament held at Westminster, 3 Henry VI, by the advice of the lords spiritual and temporal that it was to be granted and enacted that an alderman should be appointed, it was not done. The petitioners request that the king consider the matter, and order and assign to them Crowmere, Welles or Frowyk or any other alderman that pleases the king as their alderman and judge. They also request that the king grant that should the alderman so assigned leave the office, that within a month another alderman will be assigned.

Let William Crowemere, alderman be assigned as the current alderman and judge to the merchants of the Hanse to perform and do justice as is desired by this petition, and when an alderman is assigned to them in time to come let it be done according to the contents of the petition.
