Description

Nature of request
John, Duke of Bedford states that he was given the office of constable of the castle of Berwick-upon-Tweed by Henry IV, and that this gift was confirmed by Henry V and by the present king; but because he is Regent of France he cannot attend to this personally, and fears that this may put the castle in danger. He asks the king to grant, by authority of the present parliament, that he might appoint a lieutenant or lieutenants of the castle, whenever it seems expedient to him, who would answer to the king for its safekeeping - provided always that this is not prejudicial to his letters of grant of this castle.
Nature of endorsement
The King, on the advice of the lords spiritual and temporal has granted that the Duke of Bedford may appoint such a lieutenant as seems suitable to the King's council, for the safekeeping of Berwick castle at the King's pleasure; provided that the lieutenant finds before the said council such security as seems reasonable to them for the safe-keeping of the said castle.
