Commons of parliament.
Nature of request
The petition complains that whereas in other countries only the natives are allowed to be brokers, in England there are brokers of many nations, some of whom have been banished, who use usury, and who pry into the secrets of the realm and its trade, and use them in favour of foreign merchants and against English ones, so that the price of spices and sweet wines is rising, but the price of certain types of cloth is falling. It asks the commons to ask the King and lords to ordain by statute in this parliament that henceforth no alien should be a broker in England, on pain of £50 to be paid to the King, and that all Mayors, Sheriffs, Bailiffs and Escheators in cities, towns and ports should be charged with making an annual search and execution, according to the terms of the statute.
