Nature of request
When this petition had been read in parliament, considering the perils that could arise throughout the realm from the matters contained in the petition sewn to this document, if a remedy is not provided as swiftly as possible, the King has had it ordained in this parliament, and by its authority, that this petition be sent into Chancery, and proclamations made in the counties of Shropshire and Berkshire, by the King's writs; that is, by the Sheriff of Shropshire in his full County Court, and in the Welsh march adjoining the castle mentioned in the petition, or by a Justice of the Peace in the same county; and also by the Sheriff of Berkshire, in his full County Court - the next ones after the receipt of these writs - that Richard Laken and William Fitz Waryn, named in the petition, and all those who have fed them and their allies, are to appear or surrender themselves in person in Chancery, within fifteen days after the making of the proclamations, to answer to the king concerning the forcible entry and crimes mentioned in the petition. And if it should happen that they do not appear in Chancery within the fifteen days, then they are to be convicted of the forcible entry and other crimes, and to incur the penalties ordained for forcible entries, armed gangs, or disloyal gatherings. And if they do appear in person, the Chancellor is to have power, by authority of parliament, to proceed against them and to hear and determine the matter.
