Description

John de Lancastre (Lancaster), knight.

Nature of request
John de Lancastre complains that the Thornburghs, with the assent of their father, have since July in the ninth year of Henry V, tried to kill him, broken into his house and stolen his livestock, and threatened the jurors in the session at Appleby of the Justices of the Peace; and that they are still trying to kill him, and have fled into Lancashire, so that the sheriff of Westmorland cannot reach them. He asks the commons to ask the Duke of Bedford to issue writs to the sheriffs of Westmorland and Lancashire, to proclaim on two days in the county court in each county that the malefactors should appear before the king in Chancery at the quindene of Hilary next, to find security that they will keep the peace, or otherwise that they might no longer enjoy the king's protection.

(It is to be delivered to . . .)[On dorse] The response to this petition presented to the parliament held at Westminster on 1 December in the ninth year of the reign of King Henry, the fifth since the conquest, is as follows.Writs will be sent to the Justices of the Peace in Westmorland and Lancashire, and to the sheriffs of Westmorland and Lancashire, that they are to take sufficient security to keep the peace, with regard to the petitioner and to all the king's lieges, from John de Thornburgh and his companions, named in this petition, between now and the octave of the Purification of Our Lady next. And if they cannot be found, then proclamation is to be made in two full sessions of the County Court in each county, that they are to appear personally in Chancery at the quinzaine of Easter next, to find securities to keep the peace, on pain of £100 if they do not appear, those to whom the writs are issued are to put them into execution, and to inform Chancery of what they have done, under their seals, at the aforesaid quinzaine, with the writs, on pain of £40.
