Nature of request

The petitioners, all of whom, except John Lorkyn, Thomas Toppesfeld, and John Rampton, were jurors on an inquisition held at Westminster between John Hals, William Clopton, Robert Chichele, Thomas Knolles, William Cavendissh, Robert Cavendissh, William Berthilmewe, James Hog and Philip Morsell plaintiffs, and John Hynkeley and John Roughay, defendants, on a writ of trespass acquired and sued in Essex, state that John Hynkeley has now sued a writ of decies tantum in Staffordshire, claiming that they took money from the plaintiffs at Stafford and Stone to corrupt the inquisition; which they deny. They ask the lords to consider that the writ of trespass was sued in Essex, where they live, and that they have never been to Staffordshire, whereas John Hynkeley has many kinsmen and allies there, and to ask the king to ordain by authority of the present parliament that John Hynkeley might be examined on this writ, and that no process be allowed to take place against them until this has been done, and it has been established by the king's council or the Chancellor that the writ is correct and true.
