John Mortymer (Mortimer), knight.
Name(s)
Mortymer (Mortimer), John
Addressees
Commons of parliament.
Nature of request
John Mortymer asks the commons to ask the Duke of Bedford and the lords to intercede with the king, that he might come into the king's presence to obey him as his loyal liege, and be released from prison in the Tower of London, as he has found pledges in Chancery from nine citizens of London that he will keep the peace, and from others for his loyalty and good behaviour.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
[John of Lancaster], Duke of Bedford, Protector of England
William de Wertham.
Note
Rot. Parl. vol. IV p.160b (no. 8) is edited there as being from 9 Henry V (21 March 1421 - 20 March 1422), and, as the commons are asked to intercede with the king, is probably from the parliament of May 1421, when he was present. This petition seems perhaps to be slightly later - it is certainly longer and more specific, mentioning pledges found by the petitioner for his good behaviour. It is clearly from a parliament presided over by the Duke of Bedford, during the reign of Henry V, and the most obvious one is probably that of December 1421 - the only other possible one would be that of October 1419, as the writs in CCR 1413-19 p.483, ordering the petitioner to be moved to the Tower from Kenilworth Castle, are dated at Stockton, 3 December 1418. However, 1421 is suggested by CCR 1419-22 p.63, dated 18 February 1420. This seems to be mentioned in the petition: it is badly damaged but near the end it seems to say that his being a loyal prisoner, allowed to be at large without irons, is of record in Chancery. CCR 1419-22 p.242 is dated at Westminster, 27 May 1422.
