Description
Petitioners
Inhabitants of Rottingdean.
Addressees
Commons of parliament.
Nature of request
The inhabitants of the town of Rottingdean state that they were assessed at £6 10 s. for every whole fifteenth at a time when there were many more people in the town than now; but now Rottingdean has been burnt down by the French, and much of the town flooded by the sea, so that the inhabitants are greatly impoverished, and will move elsewhere if they are not helped. They ask the commons to ask the king and lords to grant a commission, by authority of parliament, to be given to certain people by the Chancellor, to inquire into the situation in Rottingdean and to inform the Exchequer if it is found to be as they say; and in that case that the Treasurer and Chief Baron of the Exchequer might have power to grant a commission to re-assess the town, which would then be discharged of the former tax.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Soit baille as seignurs (It is to be delivered to the lords)[On dorse: none].
Places mentioned
