Date

Description
Petitioners
Inhabitants of New Shoreham.
Addressees
Commons of parliament.
Nature of request
The inhabitants of the borough of New Shoreham state that they were assessed at £12 for every whole tenth at a time when there were more than five hundred inhabitants in the borough; but much of the borough has now been flooded by the sea, and there are only thirty-six inhabitants, who will move elsewhere if they are not helped. They ask the commons to ask the king and lords to grant a commission, by authority of parliament, to be given to certain people by the Chancellor, to inquire into the situation in New Shoreham and to inform the Exchequer if it is found to be as they say; and in that case that the Treasurer and Chief Baron of the Exchequer might have power to grant a commission to re-assess the borough, which would then be discharged of the former tax.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Soit baille as seignurs (It is to be delivered to the lords).[On dorse: none].
Places mentioned
New Shoreham, Sussex.
Note
This petition is edited in Rot. Parl. vol. IV pp.159b-160a (no. 6) as being from 9 Henry V (21 March 1421 - 20 March 1422). A note on the dorse says 'Prob. May (?) 1421.'
