SC 8/24/1166
Date
[? 1421-? 1422]
Description
Petitioners
Augustinian canons.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Augustinian canons state that they, alone of the religious orders, have no college or house where they can study at Oxford, and that the Bishop of Exeter had been commanded by the king to look for a suitable site for one. He has found three messuages and four tofts for sale, outside the university walls near the monks of Durham, so they ask the king to order the Chancellor and Treasurer to buy this land and give it to the Augustinians, without fine or fee being paid, for a house to be built at their own expense.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Leicester, [Leicestershire]
Oxford, [Oxfordshire].
People mentioned
[Edmund Lacy], Bishop of Exeter
Monks of Durham [College] in Oxford.
Note
This petition is edited in Rot. Parl. vol. IV p.159a-b (no. 4) as being from 9 Henry V (21 March 1421 - 20 March 1422). A note on the guard suggests that it is probably from the May parliament of that year, rather than the December one, saying 'cf. number and Rot. Parl. IV 159', although there does not appear to be any evidence that it was actually presented in parliament at all.
