Nature of request
The commons ask the king to ratify and confirm letters patent of Richard II, constituting all those charged with the repair and upkeep of the bridge between Rochester and Strood in Kent as a community, for the maintenance of the bridge, and permitting this community to elect two wardens of the bridge annually. They also ask that the wardens and community might be persons able to purchase and receive lands, tenements and rents, for the upkeep of the bridge, that they might have a common seal, that they might be persons able to plead all manner of pleas, real, personal and mixed, concerning the bridge and related matters, and that all writs purchased by the wardens, or purchased against them by others, should be upheld in law, even if the wardens should die or be removed from office.
