Description

Nature of request
The petitioners complain that a great number of scholars and clerks of the University of Oxford have disseised people of their lands and tenements in Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, and threatened others, have hunted without permission in warrens, parks and forests in these counties, and have forcibly released clerks convicted of felony from the keeping of their ordinaries. They ask the commons to ask the king, with the assent of the lords, to grant that Justices of Assizes, Justices of Gaol Delivery, and Justices of the Peace in these counties should have power to enquire into this by inquest of 12 men, and proceed against them by capias and exigent to outlawry, if they do not appear; and if they appear and traverse the inquest, and are found guilty, that they should pay a fine of £100 to the king, or be imprisoned for three years if they cannot; and if the prison wardens free them, or release them on mainprise, they should pay 100 marks. And writs should be sent to the Chancellor of Oxford University to banish any such clerks outlawed or convicted, on pain of a fine of 100 marks. And they ask that this might be enacted as a statute.
