Reference
SC 8/24/1156
Date
1420
Description
Petitioners
Beatrice Fitz Alan, widow of Thomas Fitz Alan, Earl of Arundel and Surrey.
Name(s)
Fitz Alan, Beatrice
Addressees
Duke of Gloucester, Protector of England, and the lords of parliament.
Nature of request
Beatrice, widow of Thomas, Earl of Arundel and Surrey, states that, because she was born in Portugal, and not made a denizen until after her husband's death, some of his heirs and terre-tenants obstruct her from her reasonable dower from her husband's lands, contrary to the promise of the king's father, made to her on her marriage. She requests that she might be dowable and able in law to claim, sue for, have and enjoy her reasonable dower from her husband's possessions in England, Wales and Calais, as if she had become a denizen during her husband's lifetime.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Legitur et liberatur pro custode xvi die parliamenti (Read and delivered for the Protector on the sixteenth day of parliament).[On dorse] Petitiones porrecte in parliamento tento anno octavo Henrici quinti (Petitions delivered in the parliament held in the eighth year of Henry V).
Places mentioned
Portugal
Wales
Calais, [France].
People mentioned
Thomas [Fitz Alan], Earl of Arundel and Surrey
[Humphrey of Lancaster] Duke of Gloucester, Protector of England
[Henry IV], King of England.
Note
The Latin note on the dorse (apparently contemporary or nearly so) says that this petition was presented in the parliament of December 1420, and certainly this was the only parliament in Henry V's reign presided over by the Duke of Gloucester. Rot. Parl. vol. IV p.130b is a successful petition by the same petitioner, apparently on the same subject, presented to the parliament of May 1421. CCR 1419-22 pp.172-3 is dated at Westminster, 14 July 1421. CCR 1413-19 p.267 is dated at Westminster, 28 February 1416; 313 is dated at Westminster, 28 April 1416; 407 is dated at Westminster, 8 December 1417; and 466 is dated at Westminster, 18 July 1418. None mentions the countess's nationality as an issue.
