SC 8/23/1144
Date
[1416]
Description
Petitioners
Merchants of the realm.
Addressees
Commons in parliament.
Nature of request
The petitioners ask the commons to ask the king that the grant of a subsidy to provide for the safeguard of the sea, made in the parliament held at Westminster on the Monday after All Saints, 3 Henry V, be ratified and confirmed in all points, and, as was specified in the grant, that if any merchant is found trying to evade the subsidy, or any other, he should pay double the amount of the subsidy, without any other penalty.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Conc.[On dorse] The grant previously made to the king on this matter is to be entirely kept and executed, according to the effect of the same grant.
Places mentioned
Westminster
Calais, [France]
Harfleur, [Normandy, France].
Note
The grant of the subsidy was made at the parliament of November 1415 (3 Henry V) as the petition and Rot. Parl. vol. IV p.64a make clear; this petition is most likely to be from the next parliament, that of March 1416 (3 Henry V) or the following one, that of October 1416 (4 Henry V). This is confirmed by the request that the commons approach the king on this: after these parliaments the king is not present in person until May 1421. Rot. Parl. vol. IV p.91a-b (no. 13) assigns it to 3 Henry V, so it is probably from the March parliament.
