Description

Commons of parliament.
Nature of request
The Mayor, Constables and company of the staple at Calais, make three requests:1) They complain that various merchants are carrying tin, both smelted tin called 'shotentyn' and unsmelted tin, to places other than the staple, and ask the commons to ask the king to ordain, by the advice of the lords spiritual and temporal in the present parliament, that no wool, woolfells, hides, lead, tin, smelted or not, or other merchandise of the staple should be carried overseas without being sent first to the staple, in accordance with the statutes on this.2) They ask that none of the goods or merchandise duly brought to the staple, and customs paid on it, should henceforth be removed from the staple without due process of law; and they ask for due restitution and redress for William Flete, of the company of the staple, for his goods lately taken from his houses at the staple at Calais.3) As merchants currently fear to bring wools to the staple until they are sure of the friendship of the people of Flanders and Brabant, they ask the commons to ask the king to give the merchants, and the company of the staple, his answer on this.
